ASL Abstract Motion is an immersive video installation presented across two screens positioned at a 90-degree angle, creating the spatial impression of an open book. A single, uninterrupted freeway drive moves continuously beneath nine vivid sequences of abstract American Sign Language gestures.
The gestures are not presented as literal translation. Instead, they function as visual poetry—language transformed through movement, color, repetition, scale, and rhythm. The background shifts between black and white and saturated color, connecting the movement of the road with the expressive motion of the body.
An original electronic/EDM score by Lenny Savage and Josie Smith brings a rhythmic pulse to the work. Sound and image create a dialogue between identity and abstraction, momentum and stillness.
Jon Savage is a Deaf contemporary artist from San Diego whose work spans painting, photography, cinematography, performance, and time-based media. His practice is shaped by a lifelong commitment to visual expression and bold experimentation.
His Deaf identity is central to his creative work, informing an artistic language grounded in lived experience, advocacy, visual culture, and a belief in American Sign Language as a source of power and beauty.
