Community Light Signals is an artistic metaphor that reimagines the familiar traffic light as a reflection of dynamics within the Deaf community. Each light carries its own meaning. Red symbolizes oppression. Yellow represents help. Green embodies support.
Traffic lights usually offer simple cues to stop, prepare, or go. This artwork invites a deeper look. The yellow light, or help, becomes the turning point where intentions and outcomes can change. Help given with sympathy can reinforce oppression. Help grounded in belief and encouragement opens the path to empowerment and support.
The piece asks viewers to consider how we navigate communication, empathy, and progress. Just as a driver can make a legal right turn on red, understanding and education can create new routes around barriers of oppression. The goal is movement toward growth, respect, and community wellbeing.
