Hot and Cold explores the tension between opposing responses—action and restraint—through a minimal, balanced composition. Two circular forms rest within a dark field, creating a quiet dialogue between contrasting states.
Created during the COVID era, this work reflects a period of uncertainty, where decisions carried both urgency and caution. The black surface suggests a space where light does not return, echoing moments of doubt and limited clarity.
As a Deaf artist, I approach this work through visual language—using contrast, placement, and color to express experience beyond sound. The lower warm-toned circle suggests energy, movement, and the impulse to act, while the upper cool-toned form introduces calmness, reflection, and control.
Separated yet connected within the same field, these elements create a balance that resists resolution. Neither dominates, allowing both to exist at once.
Through this restraint, the work invites reflection on how we navigate uncertainty—holding both urgency and stillness, without choosing one over the other.
