Deaf Heart explores the layered experience of identity shaped between Deaf and hearing worlds. At its core, the work reflects a sense of belonging that is both unified and divided—formed through language, family, and lived experience.
Rooted in visual language, the composition draws from the expressive clarity of ASL, where meaning is conveyed through form, movement, and spatial relationships. In contrast, the surrounding environment suggests a world defined by sound—less visible and less structured—creating a subtle tension between what is seen and what is heard.
Color plays a central role in the work. Vibrant tones represent the richness, depth, and emotional resonance found within Deaf culture, while quieter elements introduce contrast, echoing the experience of navigating between two distinct environments.
Rather than illustrating a single moment, Deaf Heart holds an ongoing state of awareness—where connection, identity, and perception continuously shift and overlap. The composition invites a slower engagement, encouraging viewers to consider how language and experience shape the way we see the world.
Printed on wood, the natural surface introduces warmth and texture, enhancing the organic presence of the piece and reinforcing its connection to lived experience.
