Golden Balboa captures the California Tower during golden hour, when warm sunlight briefly transforms the architecture and atmosphere of Balboa Park. The composition is based on a photograph I took while experiencing this moment in person.

As a Deaf artist, I approach the scene through visual language, using rhythm, contrast, color, and space to express the feeling of a specific place and time. Horizontal bands of golden yellow and orange move across the surface, reflecting the changing light and energy of the evening.

The California Tower rises in black and white against the warm background. This contrast separates the landmark from its surroundings while emphasizing its intricate architecture, history, and enduring presence within San Diego.

The layered stripes suggest time passing as daylight shifts toward evening. Together, the stillness of the tower and the movement of color create a balance between permanence and a moment that quickly disappears.

Through this interplay, Golden Balboa celebrates the warmth, rhythm, and timeless character of one of San Diego’s most recognizable landmarks.
