Why San Diego Continues to Shape My Art

Every morning feels different.

The light changes. The ocean shifts. Colors appear for only a few moments before they fade. No matter how many years I have lived in San Diego, I still find something new to notice.

As a Deaf artist, I experience the city through observation. I pay attention to movement, changing light, expressions, and quiet moments that many people pass by. Those moments stay with me long after they disappear.

Surfing has taught me to slow down. Waiting for a wave means paying attention to the rhythm of the ocean, the wind, and the horizon. Every session offers something different, and that same mindset carries into my studio.

My paintings are not simply about beaches or landmarks. They are about moments.

A colorful sunrise that lasts only minutes. Endless waves rolling toward the shore. Palm trees moving with the wind. A familiar coffee stop after a morning surf. These everyday experiences become memories, and those memories become paintings.

My signature stripe elements symbolize continuity. They reflect the ongoing rhythm of life, while each painting preserves a single moment in time.

This summer, those moments can be found in several places across San Diego. Each exhibition shares a different perspective, but together they tell the same story, one shaped by the coast, by observation, and by the city that continues to inspire me.

San Diego lets me be.
